Burn Calories

Cycling is a fun activity and can be an effective way to burn calories. If you cycle intensely enough, you can burn as many calories as you can running. It is an appropriate alternative for individuals who have to avoid weight bearing activities and are looking to lose weight. You can determine how many calories you burn while cycling by following the same process as when you determine calories burned for any other activity. Once you learn how to do it, you can apply it to any activity.

How to Burn Calories Cycling
Step 1
Bike on your own and don't draft other cyclists. While drafting, the art of tucking in behind another cyclist to reduce your wind resistance, is a necessary strategy to win a race, it won’t help you if you are trying to burn calories. Wind resistance makes your body work harder, which burns more calories.
Step 2
Choose a route that has a generous amount of hills to it. Pedaling up hill forces your muscles to work harder, which of course burns more calories from your body. If you are not used to taking hills, start with small ones and work your way up to longer, steeper hills.
Step 3
Hit a mountain bike trail. The natural resistance a trail gives your body is a perfect way to burn away calories. A good trail is full of dips and turns that give you a variety of challenges while you sweat and work off the pounds you are looking to shed.
Step 4
Maintain a continuous speed while cycling. It is tempting to take parts of your route easy in order to build up some energy. However, you are not doing your calorie count any favors. Maintaining a constant speed keeps your heart rate at its highest, which is the key to burning calories.
Step 5
Resist the temptation to shift down to an easier gear. It may be more difficult to pedal in a higher gear. However, your muscles and heart must work harder to do so, which means you will burn more calories.

How to Calculate How Many Calories You Burn While Cycling
Step 1
Ride at a nice stead pace of about 10 mph. For every 50lb of body weight you will burn about 70 calories for every hour you ride. So a 200lb man riding for 1 hour will burn approximately 210 Calories.
Step 2
Increasing your speed and incline of the ride will boost your calorie consumption. For example the same man riding at 15 mph would burn 350 calories in that 1 hour.
Step 3
A pound of fat equals 3500 calories. To calculate the time needed to burn that 1 pound use the following formula. Take your weight, divide by 50. Multiple this by 70. Then divide this figure into 3500. This is how many hours you will need to cycle over the course of a given time to burn 1 pound of fat. Example. 200lb / 50 = 4. 4 multiplied by 70 = 280, 280 divided into 3500 = approx 12.5 Hours. So if you Ride 1.75 hours every day you would loose about 1lb per week.

How to Count Calories While Cycling
Step 1
Weigh yourself in the morning before you have eaten anything. Weigh yourself three times in a row to ensure the scale is giving you a consistent number.
Step 2
Find a website that will enable you to calculate your calories burned biking. There are dozens of such sites available on the internet. Fitwatch (see references) and Healthstatus.com (see resources) are good ones.
Step 3
Enter your weight, choose the intensity you use when biking, and for how long you will be biking. If you have followed the instructions of the calorie counting site, it will give you an approximate number of calories burned.
Step 4
Keep in mind that the lower your body fat is and the more muscle you have on your body, the more calories you will burn. If you have lots of body fat and little muscle, you will not burn as much. In other words, the number the website will show you is just the national average.
Step 5
Use this approach to find out calories burned for any activity.
